What to Clean Up in the Books Before Year-End Starts
Year-end gets hard when the books are still carrying leftover problems from the rest of the year. Missing transactions, unreconciled accounts, mixed personal charges, and old uncleared items all show up at once.
The better time to clean that up is now, before the last quarter gets busy. This is not a tax-planning checklist. It is a bookkeeping cleanup so December and January are not a reconstruction project.
Why Clean Up Now
By mid-September, most of the year’s activity is already in the system — or it should be. Fixing gaps now means:
- Year-to-date reports become usable
- Tax planning later in the fall is based on better numbers
- Q4 transactions do not get piled on top of unfinished work
- January starts from current books instead of a backlog
What to Clean Up First
1. Bank and Credit Card Reconciliations
If accounts are not reconciled through the most recent month, start there. Nothing else in the books is reliable until the balances match the actual statements.
2. Missing Transactions
Look for months with thin activity, transfers that never landed, or expenses that were paid but never recorded. Summer is a common place for this to happen.
3. Mixed Personal and Business Items
Personal charges in the business account, or business deposits in a personal account, distort profit and make year-end harder. Identify them now so they do not have to be sorted in January.
4. Uncleared and Old Outstanding Items
Old checks, unmatched deposits, and leftover uncleared transactions clutter the reconciliations. Clearing what can be identified now keeps the year-end file cleaner.
5. Job Costs and Open Invoices
For contractors, make sure labor, materials, and subcontractor bills are coded to the right jobs. Then review open invoices and retainage so receivables are not a surprise later.
6. Payroll and Owner Pay Records
Confirm that payroll, contractor payments, and owner draws or wages are recorded consistently. These are the items that create extra questions if they are left messy until year-end.
A Short Pre-Q4 Cleanup List
- Reconcile all bank and credit card accounts
- Catch up any missing months
- Separate personal activity from business activity
- Review open invoices and old outstanding items
- Make sure job costs and payroll are coded correctly
That is enough to make the last quarter easier.
How KDM Accounting Services Can Help
- Bring accounts current and reconcile them
- Identify missing transactions and mixed personal items
- Organize receivables, job costs, and payroll records
- Get the file in better shape before December
The goal is simple: finish the year from clean books, not from a pile of leftover cleanup.
Clean It Up Before Q4 Gets Crowded
The last quarter is a poor time to reconstruct the first eight or nine months. A short cleanup now makes reports clearer, tax conversations easier, and January less stressful.
If your books need to be brought current before year-end starts, contact KDM Accounting Services. We’ll help you clean up the file while there is still time to do it calmly.
