A September Financial Check-In for Business Owners
September is a useful point in the year to stop and look at the business. Summer work is largely on the books. The last quarter is still ahead. There is still time to fix problems before year-end.
This is not a full year-end planning session. It is a short check-in: where the business stands now, what needs attention, and what should be handled before December gets busy.
Why September Matters
By now, most owners have eight months of activity to review. That is enough information to see patterns. It is also early enough to change course.
Waiting until December leaves fewer options. A September review gives you time.
Five Things to Look At
1. Year-to-Date Profit
Look at the Profit & Loss through August. Is the business making money after costs and overhead, or just staying busy? If margins are thin now, the last quarter will not magically fix that unless pricing, job mix, or expenses change.
2. Cash Position
Compare the bank balance with upcoming payroll, vendors, and tax payments. Ask whether cash is actually available or already spoken for. A profitable year can still feel tight if receivables and retainage are sitting out there.
3. What Customers Still Owe
Review unpaid invoices and any retainage being held. Summer work that has not been collected yet will affect fall cash. This is the time to follow up, not the time to hope it lands in December.
4. Tax Standing
September includes a federal estimated tax date. Use that as a reminder to ask a broader question: are payments and planning still in line with how the year is actually going? If 2026 has been stronger or weaker than expected, the rest of the year may need a different approach.
5. Owner Pay and Overhead
Look at what the owner is taking out and what it costs to run the business. If overhead has drifted up, or owner pay has not been reviewed since last year, September is a better time to look at it than the last week of December.
A Simple September Review
Set aside a short block of time and go through:
- Year-to-date Profit & Loss
- Current cash and near-term bills
- Unpaid invoices and retainage
- Whether tax payments still fit the year
- One action to take in the next 30 days
The last item matters. A review only helps if it changes something.
Look Now, While There Is Still Time
September is late enough to see the year’s pattern and early enough to adjust. Owners who do a short check-in now usually have a cleaner, calmer finish to the year.
